Depend® Brand Guards for Men are NOT dependable, and I’ve got hard data to prove it.
1 Star
Depend® Brand Guards for Men are NOT dependable, and I’ve got hard data to prove it.
I’m 20+ years out from prostatectomy, and suffer worsening problems with urinary incontinence. Initially, I did not require pads at all… Then, I needed thin pads, Now, over the years, I’ve graduated to needing #6 pads. Maybe eventually I’ll have to wear panties…. but at the present time, ALL I need is a dependable, well made #6 pad. KIMBERLY-CLARK DEPENDS® DO NOT SATISFY THIS NEED. They are POORLY MADE, using INFERIOR MATERIALS, as compared with “off brand” pads of similar design and appearance, which also happen also to be substantially less expensive! With Depends®, you are paying more for an inferior product. Ironic, isn’t it?So here’s the problem: Some days, I have very little urine leakage, while on other days the leakage is quite heavy. I never know what it will be, as it cycles up and down over time. Accordingly, it is essential that my pads be dependable. On my “heavy” days, they MUST have the capacity to retain urine leakage until I can change my pad. In particular, they must not leak along the edge of the pads, to wick urine into my underpants, and then to trousers. Depends® are unsatisfactory in all respects. They have less absorptive capacity, and they leak along the edges.Over the past 6 months, I began to notice that I was saturating my pads more quickly, and had to change my pads much more frequently. Sometimes I would feel wetness on the inside of my thigh. On several occasions, however, I had humiliating experiences while out in public where my pants developed large “wet spot” in my groin, making it obvious that I had “wet my pants”. On those occasions, I pulled my shirt out and stretch it as low as possible in an attempt to cover up “the wet spot” while trying to avoid anyone seeing me in this embarrassing situation. Thanks, Depends®…. You embarrassed the hell out of me with your crappy pads Over the course of the past 6 months I’ve also had occasion to buy “off brand” pads from other retailers…. one sold by Meijers (grocery store chain) in Michigan, and the other sold by CVS in Dallas area. Both stores also sold Depends®, but the “name brand” was much more expensive. Both of the “off brands” use similar black and green packaging to copy the look of Depends®, as if Depends® quality was something to be imitated. The interior packaging of all three products was very similar as well, using the same individual paper wrappers and pull-off adhesive strips. Clearly, they were all using the same basic design and similar (though not identical) materials. The shape of the pads is slightly different, but superficially, they appear nearly identical. Nevertheless, their performance was far different. While wearing the Meijers or CVS pads I did NOT experience urine leakage. Wearing the Depends® pads, I did.Nevertheless, I did not trust that my “anecdotal experience” provided strong enough evidence of the difference. So being a scientist by profession, I decided to run a controlled comparison between the CVS pads and the Depends®. I removed the adhesive backing for both pads and attached them to a cookie sheet, side by side. I then used a plastic syringe to inject equal amounts of red-dyed water into each pad in successive stages (approximately 12 ml per injection), injecting the same amount at each stage. I then photographed the pads after each stage to document their performance. I have photos for EVERY stage of the test, but I’m only including a few of them here. The results confirmed my anecdotal experience. The CVS pad absorbed liquid more efficiently. More importantly, they retained the liquid close to the center of the pad, rather than the liquid spreading quickly to the edges. What’s more, the edges of the CVS pads are a better quality elastic that tend to retain liquid INSIDE the pad. In comparison, the Depends® pad quickly became saturated at the center, then wicked liquid to the edges. This is exactly what I experienced while wearing the pads. If I had been wearing this pad, this liquid would have wicked onto my trousers and into public view. Keep in mind that I did not compress the pads in the test procedure, as would have been the case if I had been wearing them. If I had compressed them, it is reasonable to infer that much larger amounts of liquid would have been extruded from the Depends® pads. I wish now that I had done this measurement, but unfortunately, I didn’t.Please note: I apologize for using red dye in the water rather than another color. I thought it would make the liquid show up more clearly—which it does—but it also happens also to look like blood. Ewwww…. gross!I don’t believe Depends® used to be so poorly made. To the best of my recollection, they used to work very well, and they were my preferred brand. They cost more, but I assumed I was getting better quality.I don’t have any older Depends® to compare their performance to the current ones, but 30-40 years ago, back when we used to use baby diapers, I began to suspect that these companies would go through “profit taking” phases where they would substantially reduce the product quality (as a cost savings in manufacturing), before introducing a “New & Improved” version the same product to win back customers. For a while, Huggies would be the better diaper…. Then Luvs would be better. Then Pampers would be better. Over the course of 10 years of raising babies, it kept changing. Was this my imagination? Did this happen by accident? I don’t think so. Rather, I suspect this was actually done knowingly and intentionally, and my recent experience with UNdependable Depends® reminded me of my previous experience with the baby diapers.Kimberly-Clark may wish to deny this is their cynical business practice. If you read the hype on the Depends package, they brag about how well made their product is. Would this were the case!Photo Captions:Experiment Setup: Depends on the left, CVS on the right, showing the syringe used to inject red-dyed fluid. The circles represent the location where the liquid was injected.By the 10h round of injections, the difference in performance was very clear. Liquid in the CVS pad was concentrated in the center of the pad, while liquid in the Depends had spread to the very top edge of the pad as well as to the sides (more to the left of the pad than to the right). After 28 injections, the Depends pad is far more saturated, and fluid has spread to the margins. If I had been wearing the Depends pad, what a mess it would have been.UPPLANNED field verification! The entire test procedure took much longer than I expected. I did not expect the pads would absorb so much liquid, or I would have done maybe five injections at a time. During the test procedure, I happened to be wearing a Depends pad, which UNINTENTIONALLY became saturate with urine. The final two pictures show my Depends pad with yellow urine stains, with red arrows showing where the urine had wicked to the edges of the pad, and were leaking on to my trousers. The greater amount of wicking occurred in actual use because the pad was being compressed between my body and the crotch of my blue jeans. Fortunately, this did not happen out in public, or I would have had a humiliating “wet spot”.Shame, Kimberly Clark. Shame on you. This is MY life you are messing with.
