If you see black flakes or particles in the water, it's just carbon from the electrodes. This will happen day one and the unit is fine and should work for years.
Every humidifier takes maintaince to ensure it's running well and is pumping clean mist out. These units make that part easy and forgiving in terms of not pumping out musty, moldy water.
The downside if any is that you are boiling water through the conduction of electricity through water. Resistance to the current builds heat which boils the water. It's like the heating element of a toaster or an electric stove in terms of how the heat is generated. If you use the machines overnight in multiple rooms, you will most likely notice a difference in your electricity bill. If that's not a trade off you are comfortable making, don't use them.
I also have one at my desk at work and keep it on the floor next to me and try to remember to breathe the steam in frequently. If you want to use Vicks or kaz's products to put some menthol or camphor type scents into the air, they work fine, I like to use a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus instead. If you are sick and need to open your sinuses, cover your head with a towel and breathe the steam in. Start with your face about 18-24 inches away to make sure you don't burn your face. Slowly bring your face closer to the unit to breathe as much steam in as possible. Take care to move your face in carefully and slowly as you are breathing in steam not a cool mist and you can burn yourself if you get too close.
Speaking of burns, I have small children and I use a unit in their room at night. My four year old knows not to touch it and my one year old is in a crib. If you have children who can get too close and or touch the steam stream, they can get burned, so take the necessary precautions to make sure that does not happen (move it away from small hands) or don't buy the unit.
I hope that helps!
I live in New England and have forced hot air heat. So it is very dry, very. I have tried whole house humidification - very concerning the yuck that builds up in the furnace. I have tried wicking humidifiers - fan noise, expensive filter, yucky stuff grows in them. I have tried vaporizers - white dust, terrible white dust at times and I tried using distilled water at a dollar a gallon but that gets expensive. Then there is this very inexpensive solution that is so absurdly perfect. Both steam and heat! It will easily overwhelm an average bedroom with moist warm air in a few hours. I use it in my family room each evening. I add a pinch of baking soda, fill it once and within minutes hot steam which makes a huge difference in a very short time. When the water drops below the electrodes it stops. Next evening repeat. Very inexpensive, no ongoing cost, most effective way to add humidity and a bonus of raising the temp in the room it is in. Fantastic... They do consume electricity which varies depending on the water's properties - so a low steam uses lesser electricity than upping the steam (baking soda).
The trouble is this: the capacity of the "water tank" is too small. I find that I have to keep a bunch of bottles full of water next to the vaporizer to refill it - it really barely lasts through a night of sleep (ie 6-7 hours). I just can't believe the reviews where some people talk of steam for 18 hours! Huh? This is hard to fathom! Perhaps if one lives 250 feel below sea level in Death Valley would they get that amount of steam production ! I live at sea level in coastal California so my experience should be rather standard. If I were in Colorado at 6000 feet and lower atmospheric pressure it would steam faster and water would run out quicker. But this is not the case.
And though the capacity of the unit seems to be technically a gallon, you can't fill it up to the top or the heater will sputter out a lot of water and you'll need a towel to protect your floor from all the splatter. The "max" line is much lower than full capacity if the tank. It is also super noisy when full and splattering, of course. As of this writing (Feb 2, 2015) the price on the 1 gallon unit is something like $28. I bought mine a couple of weeks ago for $15 but I have seen it much higher in past. I've also seen special prices for "Prime Only" customers which I am. Don't know why price varies so much. I'm returning the unit once the new 1.5 gallon unit I ordered arrives in the next couple of days.
I would strongly recommend getting the 1.5 gallon vaporizer if you want to have it running uninterrupted overnight and if you want to avoid the hassle of constant refillings. We shall see but I'm expecting maybe 10-11 hours between fillings on the 1.5 gallon unit while the 1 gallon unit involves about 6-7 hours between fillings. But maybe the configuration of the tank and heater in the 1.5 gallon unit is better designed and will last longer - who knows. So 4 stars for simple operation and solid ability to create a lot of steam, but deduct 1 star from 5 because of refilling hassle.
